East London is home to over 600,000 households and is one of the most diverse communities in the United Kingdom. At the time of the 2001 census the population of the sub region was 1.5 million, of which 57% were identified as White British and 43% from Black and Minority Ethnic communities.
Over a third of households in the sub region are owner-occupiers with a mortgage, with an additional 20.1% of households being owner occupiers without a mortgage. An estimated 15.3% of households live in the private rented sector. The remaining households are resident in the social rented sector; 18.4% in a council rented home and 11.7% in Registered Social Landlord accommodation.
