East London Reciprocal Agreement
The aim of the East London Reciprocal Agreement is to increase options for people with a social housing tenancy in East London to move within the sub region and by doing so to avoid homelessness, increase safe options for households at risk of harm, to aid mobility, make better use of stock and to respond to households changing needs.
The intention is to ensure that where a household wishes to remain in their own home they have the necessary support and advice to do so but where it is necessary for a household to leave their home we will work with them to secure alternative accommodation where it is possible to do so, however this is subject to suitable accommodation being available in the area requested by the tenant and might not be possible in all cases.
The principle is that local authorities and registered providers in the sub region cooperate to move households where a move is needed and where suitable available accommodation can be identified.
Possible reasons for requesting a reciprocal
- To escape from domestic violence, homophobia, racism or other hate crime
- People exiting prostitution
- Child protection
- Under occupation
- People escaping from or exiting gangs
- Health, disability or care needs
- Work, training or education
- Options for requesting a Reciprocal are not limited to these examples, from time to time unforeseen circumstances might occur for households and requests will be considered individually and on their own merit.
In order to make an application for a reciprocal move through the sub regional scheme tenants must have an existing tenancy with one of the sub regional local authorities or cooperating registered providers. It is acknowledge that due to circumstances the household might not be occupying the tenancy, as in the case of households escaping from domestic violence who might be staying temporarily in a refuge or with friends. Where there is any uncertainty the household should contact the named person from the local authority or the registered provider they hold a tenancy with.
Tenants or housing advisor seeking further information about the Reciprocal Agreement need to make contact with the named person from the local authority or registered provider which provides their accommodation. For details of the named contact person see the Reciprocal Contact List.
