Apply for social housing

How to apply for the social housing register, update your details and advice for your application

Information before you apply

The housing register application form takes 2 hours to complete.

  • It is recommended that you have all the information ready before you start the process, rather than trying to find the information as you come to each question. Please see below what you will need in order to complete an application
  • You can exit the application at any time and save it so, that you can return to it later.
  • If you have already made an application and want to inform us about any change in circumstances please use the change of circumstances form

If someone else is completing the application for you, they must complete the Declaration at the end of the application.

About the application process

The personal information we collect from you will be shared with fraud prevention agencies who will use it to prevent fraud and money-laundering and to verify your identity. If fraud is detected, you could be refused certain services, finance, or employment. Further details of how your information will be used by us and these fraud prevention agencies, and your data protection rights, can be found on the Cifas website.

You will be asked questions about yourself, all other people included on the application and your housing circumstances including:

  • full names date of birth
  • National Insurance number
  • immigration status
  • current address details
  • address history, for the last 3 years
  • medical details
  • employment details

If you do not answer all questions in full or provide relevant documents as listed on the next page, your application may be rejected.

As an applicant you can only include people who normally live (or might reasonably expected to live) with you on your application. Usually this will mean the following members of your family:

  • You, and your spouse or civil partner
  • Your children who are normally resident with you
  • Your parents if they are normally resident with you

To learn more about how the Council uses the information you provide, please refer to our General Privacy Notice

Finally, please be aware that this form saves the information you have entered onto it as you go along when you click on the 'Save and Next' button at the bottom of each page. Then use the menu at the top left to get back to the page you were completing so you can finish this off.

This means that you can complete separate sections of the form and come back and complete others later. For example, when you have collected the information you need to answer particular questions. The form, however, is set to time out after 15 minutes.
