Earlier this week, pupils from seven local schools took part in “Barking and Dagenham’s Dragon Den” as part of the Social Enterprises School programme. The pupils were encouraged to work together, research and pitch their social enterprise ideas to four friendly dragons. The programme empowers pupils to launch their own social enterprises, providing invaluable exposure to a range of essential life skills.

The pitches boasted a wide variety of ideas, with each school bringing something to the table that would help the community and their cause. From bake sales and helping the hungry, to littering and a healthier vape alternative, these pupils ignited the den with their incredible pitches.

Runner-up of the Barking and Dagenham Dragon’s Den: Becontree Primary School

Best Environmental Enterprise: Trinity School

Most Creative Pitch: Eastbury Community Primary School

Councillor Elizabeth Kangethe, Cabinet Member for Education Attainment and School Improvement, was one of the ‘Dragons’ in the panel. She said: “The youth who took part in this event represent the future of our borough, embodying the essence of Barking and Dagenham. Witnessing their dedication and innovation was truly inspiring. The diversity and community-driven nature of their projects mirror the vibrant spirit of our borough. I strongly urge more schools to participate in similar initiatives in the future.”

This programme it’s part of a three-year project and is fully-funded by the Social Enterprise Academy thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Social Enterprise Academy supported five schools across Barking and Dagenham in 2022/2023, has been supporting seven schools in 2023/2024, and will be supporting 12 schools in 2024/2025
