Valence Ward is located to the north-west of the borough with Green Lane (A1083) being the Ward's major transport route. The Ward is home to the Valence House Museum (see inset) and Valence Park.
Valence has the lowest population in the borough at 8,784 with Greater London Authority population projections estimating an increase to 10,334 by the Year 2028. However this will still represent the lowest ward population in the borough.
Census 2001 Housing Tenure figures show that the majority of households are either 'owned with a mortgage' (38%) or 'rented from the local authority' (38%). However it is important to note that under the Right to Buy scheme the number of households that are owned with a mortgage or loan will now be higher than the number that are rented from the local authority.
As with the total Ward population; Valence also has the lowest Working Age Population in the borough at 5,305, representing 5% of the borough's total Working Age Population. Of this, 5,305 Working Age Population 22.4% are claiming benefits with the highest claims being for Incapacity benefit and Lone Parent benefit. Despite the low Working Age Population the number of Benefit Claimants is still higher than the borough rate of 20.5%.
Unemployment Rates for Valence have usually been below the borough rate. However for February 2007 the Ward rate has risen above the borough rate.
