Village ward

 

Village Ward is located to the west of the borough and borders the London Borough of Havering. Most of the Ward is residential housing which comprises mainly of terraced or semi detached houses, however there are a number of Flatted Accommodation Estates such as Ibscott Close, Millard Terrace, The Leys (Wellington Drive and Birdbrook Close) and the high rise tower block of Thaxted House. There is also quite a lot of open space in Village Ward such as Dagenham Park, The Leys, Beam Valley Country Park and the southern end of Eastbrookend County Park. The Mall Shopping Centre on the Heathway is also located just inside Village Ward.

 

The current estimate population is 9,938 and Greater London Authority population projections estimate this will increase to approximately 12,700 by the year 2028. The 2001 Housing Tenure figures show that Village Ward has the highest percentage of households that are rented from a housing association or registered social landlord and the highest percentage of Privately Rented housing. The 2004 Dwelling Stock figures show that Village Ward has the highest number of households in the borough which account for 6.3% of all the borough's households.

 

The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004 Scores show that one of the wards super output areas falls within the top 10% most deprived in the Country, and 3 of the other super output areas in the ward fall within the top 20% most deprived. Health Statistics show that Village has the 2nd lowest Average Life Expectancy in the borough at 75.8 years old.

 

23.5% of the ward's Working Age Population is claiming benefits; this is slightly higher than the borough's claimant figure of 20.5% of which Incapacity and Lone Parent Benefit have the highest numbers of claims. Unemployment rates are also higher than the borough average with the February 2007 rate being 7.5 for Village Ward and 5.6 for the borough.
