Village ward

Did you know…

The Cross Keys pub dates back to the 15th Century. It later belonged to the Comyns family. It was first named as The Queens Head in 1708. It became the Cross Keys in 1785. The name derived from the dedication of the Parish Church opposite as St Peter is always holding the 'keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.'

Dagenham Village was once the centre of Dagenham and the old cottages in Crown Street dated back to medieval times. The village was a busy area where farm workers and their families lived. There were several shops, 4 inns and a blacksmith's forge. Surrounding the village was countryside and farmland.

The Norman tower of St Peter and St Paul Church collapsed backwards in 1800. No lives were lost as the vicar was late and the congregation were waiting outside and not in the church.

The Dagenham East rail crash was a railway accident on the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway line of British Railways which occurred at Dagenham. The accident took place on 30 January 1958 and was a rear-end collision of 2 late-running trains in foggy conditions at Dagenham East station. The accident occurred after 1 train had passed signals at danger due to a driver's error. 10 people were killed in the accident and 89 injured.
