Barking Makers Market

bd

Are you a local budding entrepreneur? Do you want to try your hand at market trading? If you’ve developed new skills during lockdown - for example making food products, craft products, or giftware - you’re just the person we’re looking for!

We have big plans for Barking Town Centre over the summer months to celebrate new business ideas and skills. These plans, supported by the government's Reopening High Streets Safely Fund, will welcome around 27 brand new market stall traders to Barking Town Centre, mainly in the Town Hall Square – could you be one of them?

Secure your own stall

We’re looking for local traders who are keen to test the market – and what better way than to start with your own stall in the heart of Barking's buzzing marketplace.

Barking Town Centre already has a strong market tradition and we’re looking for new business ideas from individuals, groups or community organisations to take part in an exciting new opportunity to promote their products.

The markets will operate under Covid-safe guidelines and form part of our plans to encourage people to return to the town centre safely and will be held on eight Tuesdays and Saturdays (subject to government Covid guidance).

If you're interested in securing a stall, we'd love to hear from you. Check out our FAQs below and register your interest today.

Makers Market FAQs

What type of stalls are we looking for?

The market is to encourage new and growing business ventures and to provide local people with an opportunity to sell their products and services to a wider audience.

We are looking to create a market with goods that people can’t find elsewhere. Therefore, we’re not looking to compete with existing market traders and would like to ensure a wide-ranging selection of products are made available. Please note, due to safety issues new imported jewellery cannot be accepted.

We are looking for goods that are creative, ethical and made in Britain and we will use this to prioritise the allocation of stalls.

Everyone in the Barking community is invited to express an interest. We’d love to hear from young people, older people, individuals or groups, formal or informal, and more!

We appreciate that you may not be able to commit to every session and therefore we will be offering stalls to fit demand and to create exciting markets for customers.

I’ve never done this before, what support will I get?

Stalls and facilities will be set out to provide a Covid-safe environment.

The council’s experts in market trading and business support will be offering sessions to help build your confidence. Trading standards officers will be on hand to help make sure that the goods you are selling are safe and meet legal requirements.

The markets will be widely publicised across the borough to encourage customers to come into town safely and buy your products. You will, of course, be allowed to use your own social networks to promote your stall.

How much will it cost me?

It's completely free! All markets in Barking are licensed and you will be issued with a day licence to allow you to trade. Licences will be issued when stalls are allocated. You will be allocated a covered stall that is 3m by 4.5m with a table and power point.

I’m really interested, what do I need to do now?

You can express your interest by filling in the form at the bottom of this page and by letting us know:

  • your story about your business
  • if you make your own products, how you ensure the highest quality?
  • what recycling or ethical sourcing you use?

We’re looking for creative flair!

We’ll also need to know how frequently you would like a stall.

When will I know if I have a stall?

Whilst we will do our best to accommodate all interest, the number of stalls will be limited. We will be looking to create markets that encourage visitors and offer an attractive range of quality goods. Proposals that offer unique products, with a high level of creativity and an attractive layout that tells the story of your product will be given highest priority.  We cannot offer exclusivity.

We will review your proposal and the Market Manager will contact you two weeks before the opening on 22 June. Once you're successful with your proposal, all your questions about facilities, set up times and any other points will be answered by the Markets team.
