Benefit fraud and fraud investigations
Responsibility for Housing Benefit fraud investigations is with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The government set up a Single Fraud Investigation Service (SFIS) within DWP which investigates all benefit fraud, including Tax Credits fraud. We are committed to tackling the issue of benefit fraud, and we'll support SFIS with any investigations they are conducting using data-sharing rules in place to accommodate this.
Housing Benefit staff will continue to approach benefit fraud in a highly trained and professional manner carrying out the same rigorous checks to ensure fraud and/or error doesn’t enter the system. We'll continue to carry out data matches with various sources, such as HMRC, to identify discrepancies and potential cases to refer to SFIS for investigation.
The responsibility for the investigation of potential Council Tax Support fraud remains with local authorities. Our corporate fraud team is responsible for investigating any potential fraudulent claim for this support.
