Information about the Young Mayor
The votes are in! David Anyanwu (16), a student at Dagenham Park school, has been elected as the new Young Mayor of Barking and Dagenham. David was recently voted into the role by his peers in the Barking and Dagenham Youth Forum, picking up the baton from his predecessor, Regina Pamba.
After being elected, David said:
"Honestly, being young mayor has been so empowering. I feel so honoured to have been chosen amongst other strong candidates and to represent the young people in our borough. I am continuously receiving support from my friends and family. Not only am I excited for the opportunities I might receive, but also the challenges that may surface. I look forward to learning from this amazing experience. I'm determined to make a positive impact on our community and hopefully leave a print on it. I have been given the opportunity to help young people in the borough and I am set on making the most of it as I can."
David’s term will run from March 2024 until February 2025, he will work alongside one of the BAD Youth Forum sub-groups to fundraise for their chosen charity, which this year is Purple Penguins. The charities clubs have been designed for children aged 6-18 years of age, who have a disability or learning difficulty which makes it difficult for them to access mainstream clubs and groups. The charity offers activities like sensory play, arts and crafts, cooking, and trips out. David will attend various formal events during his term and represent the voices of young people across the borough on topics important to them.
