Council Tax rebate

Council Taxpayers living in a band A to D property will receive a one-off payment of £150 to help with rising energy costs.

Council Taxpayers living in a band A to D property will receive a one-off payment of £150 to help with rising energy costs. This is not a loan and you do not have to pay this back.

Who qualifies for the £150 rebate?

  • residents liable for the council tax on the 1 April 2022
  • living in a council tax band A - D (or band E if a disabled band reduction applies)
  • The property must be the main home (second homes or empty properties are not eligible)
  • some properties which are exempt from council tax will receive the rebate. Such as homes occupied only by students, persons under 18, severely mentally impaired or annexes occupied by dependant relative
  • those in receipt of full Council Tax Support will also qualify

If you don’t know which band your property is in, you can find it on your latest Council Tax bill or you can check your band here.

Only one £150 payment can be made per household, regardless of the number of occupants or liable council taxpayers.

The payment only applies to those households who are liable on the 1 April.

The rebate cannot be paid to households where a non-resident owner is liable to pay the Council Tax such as a House of Multiple Occupation (HMO). If you are a landlord or a lettings company you cannot receive the rebate on behalf of your tenants.

How can I claim my £150 rebate?

The online application is now closed and you can no longer claim online for the rebate.

Please do not worry if you are eligible and were unable to apply by the 31 August 2022.

We will be automatically paying your £150 rebate to your Council Tax account by the end of September.

You can check if your Council Tax account has been credited online if you are registered for My B&D.

If you are not registered for My B&D, you can register here.

How will I know when my online application has been approved?

Once you have completed your online application, you can use this link to find out about the progress of it.

If we need any further information from you, we will contact you.

Please do not contact us by email or telephone to find out about the status of your application as we are unable to respond with any additional information.

What if my bank account is overdrawn and the bank will get the payment instead of me?

Even if your bank account is overdrawn you can request that the bank do not use this £150 rebate to pay your overdraft. You will need to write to your bank to request this. This is called “first right of appropriation”

A sample letter that you may wish to use to exercise your “right of appropriation” is available on the National Debt website.

I would like the £150 credited to my Council Tax account instead of a direct payment

We will be automatically crediting the Council Tax accounts of all eligible residents who have not made an application by the deadline date of Wednesday 31 August. You can expect to receive this credit on your Council Tax account by the end of September.

I’m not in a band A to D, but I still need help

You will be eligible for a £150 payment under our Discretionary Energy Rebate scheme if you meet the following criteria:

  • Live in a band E-H property
  • In receipt of Council Tax Support as at 1 April 2022
  • You are the registered person to pay Council Tax

We have written to everyone who is eligible under this scheme to inform them that they qualify.

Do I get any extra help as a Pensioner?

Yes, we are making a further £150 top-up payment to all residents who at 1st April 2022 were of pension age (66 and over) and in receipt of Council Tax Support (CTS). Letters have been sent to everyone who is eligible for this Pensioner top-up payment.

We have informed those pensioners whose bank details we hold that we have paid them automatically. We have also reminded those that have yet to apply for the main Energy Rebate scheme that they need to do this to receive both that £150 payment and this Pensioner top-up of £150.

Please note that you will receive the main Energy Rebate payment first and then the Pensioner top-up will be paid by the end of September.

Please do not worry if you are eligible and were unable to apply for the main rebate by the 31 August 2022.

We will be automatically paying £300 which is both your main £150 rebate and your £150 Pensioner top-up payment to your Council Tax account by the end of September.

You can check if your Council Tax account has been credited online if you are registered for My B&D.

If you are not registered for My B&D, you can register here.
