Discover the Psychology of Babies
COME ALONG WITH YOUR BABY TO LEARN, MAKE FRIENDS AND HAVE FUN

Baby’s Next Steps is a course, developed by the Community Educational Psychology Service, which combines adult discussion and reflection with different activities promoting parent-child interaction each week (singing, sensory and messy play activities). Parents have told us that they find the course really helpful for learning about their baby’s development, developing a stronger bond with their baby, learning about new activities they can do with their baby and developing a support network of other parents. They are welcome to attend all sessions starting on any week, or any single session.

The aim of this course is to intervene early to promote better long-term outcomes for children and families in Barking and Dagenham by:

Developing stronger attachments between parents and their babies
Providing opportunities for parents to reflect on their parenting experiences
Enabling parents to feel confident in supporting their baby’s learning and development
Providing opportunities for parents to get to know other parents and support each other

BABY’S NEXT STEPS: Feedback from parents
Parents told us that the course helped them to interact more with their baby and strengthened their bond:
“This has made us closer and bonded more. I plan to spend more time with my daughter with less distraction around”
“I learned how to interact with my son! Now we have quiet play time”
“This course has opened up other opportunities to communicate with my baby”
“I now intend to play more with my baby and come down to her positional level”
“I learned how to play with my baby. Now he is looking at me when I am calling him”

Parents said that the course provided opportunities for reflecting on their parenting experiences:
“This was a very interesting few weeks, I learnt a lot about myself and my baby”
“It’s been great to have a time and place to think about how to spend time with my baby”
“The course made me think more about really focusing on my baby and playing. Now I put time aside to really focus on her and give her my full attention. Wish we could come every week forever!”

Parents have highlighted that they enjoyed learning about their baby’s development and found out about new activities they could do together:

“We now plan on making our own games at home”
