Housing strategy

The Barking and Dagenham Housing Strategy sets out our vision, aims and priorities for housing in Barking and Dagenham over the next five years.

It examines the housing situation in Barking and Dagenham and how we will address the main priorities and challenges.

The strategy looks at, and is responsible for, all housing in the borough, including privately owned housing, council housing, and sheltered and supported housing.

The housing strategy has been developed during a period of difficult economic conditions.

In Barking and Dagenham in particular we have a growing number of households on middle incomes who are no longer able to afford their own home.

The strategy therefore highlights the actions we are taking to provide new homes and affordable homes in Barking and Dagenham.

The strategy sets out four key objectives for housing in the borough:

  • delivering social and economic regeneration through building high quality homes and thriving communities
  • investing in new council housing and establishing new ways to deliver affordable housing
  • good quality services
  • sustainable communities
