Applications for secondary and technical schools now open

School funding

Applications are now open for parents with children due to move to secondary school or a technical or training school in September 2018.

Although parents won’t find out if they’ve been successful in securing a place at their chosen school until March next year, they must apply before the 31 October deadline.

Late applicants could mean parents are less likely to secure a place for their child at a preferred school.

As well as secondary school applications, the process is open for technical or training schools in the borough. These offer students aged 14 to 19 courses based on specific skills needed for certain careers.

Enormous impact on a young person’s life

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement, said: “As our latest results showed, schools in the borough achieved record-breaking results, proving Barking and Dagenham is as good a place as anywhere for young people to continue their education.

“While it might seem a little early to be thinking an entire year ahead, choosing the correct school can have an enormous impact on a young person’s life and I would urge parents to carefully consider and research the options available.”

Free events to help parents choose

To help parents understand the application process and to answer any questions, Barking and Dagenham Council is hosting a free event at the Broadway Theatre, Barking, at 7pm on Tuesday, 12 September.

There will also be walk-in help sessions available at Dagenham Library every Tuesday between 9am and 4.30pm from 12 September until the application process closes.
