Barking and Dagenham residents are in for a classical treat as the works of Franz Schubert are set to be brought to life by the borough's young people.

The event, which takes place at The Broadway Theatre, will see English baritone Roderick Williams OBE and acclaimed pianist Christopher Glynn joined by more than 200 local young people as they perform Schubert’s Die Winterreise in English.

Die Winterreise is one of the pinnacles of Schubert’s music. It is a collection of 24 songs that tell the story of an unnamed character who wanders through the winter landscape, absorbed and singing in fascination at the world around him.

“I am pleased that so many students from Eastbury and Riverside are taking part, and learning about the works of Schubert.”

Williams and Glynn have been working with students from Riverside and Eastbury Community Schools to learn the songs. They have also composed their own musical pieces in response to Schubert's works and become singing champions in their schools and community.

Despite only living to the tender age of 31, Franz Schubert left behind a vast body of music, including over 600 vocal works.

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to learn from baritone and composer, Roderick Williams.

“I am pleased that so many students from Eastbury and Riverside are taking part and learning about the works of Schubert.”

The performance starts at 7.30pm on Friday 25 January and Barking and Dagenham residents are able to buy tickets for £11 (including booking fee).

Tickets can be bought from The Broadway's website: https://www.thebroadwaybarking.com/
