Barking and Dagenham is set to get a festive makeover this weekend with a packed day of Christmas events.

Barking Mad about Christmas returns this Saturday, 4 December and will see a host of free festive entertainment taking place including carol singing, arts and crafts, dance performances, magic shows, a Christmas singalong and the chance to see real reindeer.

Children will have the chance to visit Santa’s grotto for free and receive a gift from Father Christmas, as well as the opportunity to join in a special elf hunt and be in with a chance of winning a prize.

We’re delighted to be able to kick-start our Christmas celebrations with some festive fun this Saturday in Barking town centre and Barking Market.

There will also be a number of workshops taking place, including holly wreath making, tree decorating, and creating a festive hat.

London’s famous bear, Paddington, will also be roaming around Barking spreading some seasonal cheer.

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, said: “We’re delighted to be able to kick-start our Christmas celebrations with some festive fun this Saturday in Barking town centre and Barking Market.

“There will be loads of family-friendly entertainment for people to enjoy, whatever your age, so please come along and enjoy the festivities and help create some memories that could last a lifetime, all while being able to browse around a true east London market, which offers everything from coffee to cauliflowers and Christmas trees.”

The festive fun starts at 11am in Barking town square outside the town hall and continues throughout the day until 5pm, with the big Christmas tree lights switch-on taking place at 4.50pm.
