Residents are invited to kick-start the festive season this weekend with the annual Christmas tree lights switch-on at Barking Mad About Christmas.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday, 30 November in Barking Town Square with celebrations getting underway at 11am.

There will be a host of activities taking place throughout the day including a live stage with dance performances, carol singing, festive karaoke, and games as well as free face painting and an arts, crafts and vintage fair, hosted by Studio 3 Arts, to get some Christmas stocking fillers.

Children will also have the chance to visit Santa in his grotto, as well as meet a real-life reindeer.

The Christmas tree lights will be switched on at 4.50pm with The Snowman and The Snowdog.

Festive favourite

Ann Marie Peña, head of culture at Barking and Dagenham Council, said: “This is always one of our most popular events of the year and I’m delighted we have yet another fun-filled festive day for all the family.

“Everyone is welcome and what better way to kick off the festive period than seeing the lights switched on and enjoying some classic Christmas activities.”

There will also be free workshops taking place throughout the day at the Barking Learning Centre where visitors can get hands on and make Christmas wreaths, write a letter to Santa or create festive decorations.
