Council launches cool competition to name its new gritters

Gascoigne Primary school children were joined by members of the council and a gritter to launch the council's name a gritter competitionTags Adults , Children , Family , Residents , Teenagers

The clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter and there’s a definite chill to the air which can mean only one thing – gritting season is nearly upon us! This year, we’re celebrating the start of our favourite time of year by giving you the chance to win tickets to one of the coolest spots in London, Belowzero Ice Bar.

Our gritting vehicles are warming up their engines and filling their hoppers with salt, ready to be spread across Barking and Dagenham, but there’s one thing they’re missing - a name! Rather than choose them ourselves, we’re handing the power over to you and letting local people pick the titles of three of our gritters.

We've all heard of 'Usain Salt' and 'Gritney Spears'

This is your chance to celebrate Barking and Dagenham’s people and places, honour someone you love, or just come up with a hilarious pun. We’ve seen some corkers at other councils over the last few years – Gritney Spears, Usain Salt and Nicole Saltslinger to name but a few. But we think that you can do better and come up with original and witty names worthy of the fantastic job our gritters do every year. Best of all, the winners will each receive a family ticket to Belowzero Ice Bar in London, where they can admire the stunning ice sculptures while enjoying an ice cold beverage.

When bad weather strikes, our gritters are on the road throughout the night into the early hours of the morning, making sure our roads are safe and free of ice. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to keep services operating or reach our most vulnerable residents. So, with this in mind, if there’s a hero in your life who you want to recognise, why not put forward their name to be on one of the vehicles? Or, if you’ve lived in the borough all your life and love your community, why not show that by picking a name which  celebrates Barking and Dagenham?

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: “Each winter, our gritters are out on the roads day and night, helping to keep the borough moving and making sure our residents are safe.

“We want to give local people a chance to be part of this essential work, by naming the vehicles that do the gritting. So, get your thinking caps on, submit your suggestions and keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages, where you’ll get the chance to vote for your favourite names.”

Cool prize up for grabs if you're a winner

Starting today, you can submit up to three ideas for names on the council’s website. Submissions close at 9am on Thursday 22 November, we’ll then be whittling down the entries to a top 24. The power is then handed back to you, as you’ll get the chance to vote for your favourite on Facebook and Twitter via a series of knock out polls. The winners will then be invited to an official naming ceremony, where they’ll pick up their prize – a family ticket for four to Belowzero Ice Bar in London!

For more information on the competition, prize and to send in your ideas, head to the submission page.
