Barking and Dagenham Council has welcomed the news that local residents and visitors to Barking Riverside will soon benefit from quicker and easier journeys with the confirmation that Barking Riverside will become the capital’s newest railway station this summer – ahead of schedule.

The extension will slash journey times between Barking and Barking Riverside, which currently takes 25 minutes by bus, and will also connect more than 10,000 new homes being built, along with a range of community, commercial and retail spaces.

Councillor Cameron Geddes, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said:

“This is great news and a major milestone for Barking Riverside and the borough as a whole, coming closely after the commencement of the Thames Clipper service from the Riverside. The London Overground Extension has been in the pipeline for some time, and it’s very good to see it come to fruition.

“We’re always looking for ways to encourage growth and increase connectivity to benefit those who live, work, visit and travel through our borough – and this very welcome news will also mean greater accessibility to all of the exciting developments taking shape by the riverside.”

The 4.5km extension to the heart of Barking Riverside will see four trains operate per hour, and journeys from Barking Riverside to Barking will take just seven minutes, with easy interchange to both the District and Hammersmith & City lines into central London and c2c services.
