Happy birthday Vera!

Barking and Dagenham Council leader, Councillor Darren Rodwell on behalf of the borough has wished Dame Vera Lynn 100th birthday today.

Vera – known as the Forces’ Sweetheart in the Second World War, is a former resident of the borough.

Cllr Rodwell said: “Vera is a national legend who has given so much to the country – especially to the members of our armed forces during the war.

“I am sure council colleagues and residents will join me in wishing Vera a happy 100th birthday and thanking her for all she has contributed to our country.”

And as part of the borough’s celebrations of Vera’s birthday celebrations a tribute concert took place at Valence House on Saturday 18 March.

During the war Vera toured war zones boosting the morale of our troops.

The songs most associated with her are “We’ll Meet Again”, “The White Cliffs of Dover”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square”.

Vera has since worked for charities connected with ex-servicemen, disabled children and breast cancer.
