Huge fine for litter lout

An east London woman has been fined and ordered to pay over £600 for throwing a cigarette stub out on a Barking street.

Geraldine Gibson of Hermitage Walk, South Woodford, was brought before Barkingside Magistrates, after she failed to pay the initial £75 fine.

Councillor Laila Butt, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: “Cigarette stubs are as much rubbish as a can or street wrapper. Over 60 per cent of street litter in the borough is made up by cigarettes.

“It’s why if you get caught throwing them on our streets you will pay dearly for it.”

The case is part of the council’s on-going clampdown on grime crime in the borough.

Cllr Butt, said: “We will be relentless in our pursuit or litter louts, flytippers and other assorted enviro criminals in our drive to make a better Barking and Dagenham.”
