Local lottery launch hopes to raise thousands of pounds for the community

Tickets have gone on sale today for a new local lottery, which will help fund good causes across the borough while also offering players the chance to win a jackpot of up to £25,000 each week.

Barking and Dagenham Council is the first local authority in the capital to launch an online-only lottery and hopes to raise almost £200,000 for local community groups over the next four years.

Every time a player purchases a ticket, priced at £1 each, they will have the chance to select a specific local good cause that they want to support, with the chosen group receiving 50p and 10p going to a collective community fund.

Council Leader Darren Rodwell, Deputy Leader councillor Saima Ashraf, and council chief executive Chris Naylor joined community groups in Barking market to celebrate the launch of the new scheme.

‘We are determined to find innovative ways to continue supporting good causes that benefit residents in Barking and Dagenham’

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, said: “Despite ever-increasing financial pressures on local authorities, we are determined to find innovative ways to continue supporting good causes that benefit residents in Barking and Dagenham. We hope that this scheme could mean some groups receive thousands of pounds of local money.

“The great thing about the Barking and Dagenham Lottery is that it isn’t just the lucky winners who benefit, the wider community do too.

“Players will be directly involved in funding local good causes through the purchasing of tickets, but they can also choose to donate their all winnings to that same good cause if they wish as well.”

The lottery will be run and managed by Gatherwell, which operates similar schemes across the UK, on behalf of Barking and Dagenham Council.

The first draw will take place on Saturday 21 October.
