Barking and Dagenham’s nurseries and pre-schools are spreading the Christmas joy by collecting unused women’s cosmetics and toiletries to give to a local women’s centre.

Nobody thought that when a suggestion was made for the staff from one nursery to donate some unwanted and unused cosmetics for a women’s support group, that it would escalate to a collection on such a grand scale.

So far, over 150 different items including shampoo, nail varnish, body butter and sanitary products have been donated from a number of local education institutes and will be heading to the Excel Women’s Centre in Barking on Thursday.

“It is great to see that staff and users of our early year settings have taken it upon themselves to help these women and I would like to say a big thank you for doing so.”

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement said: “This is such a thoughtful thing to do, especially at this time of the year. I am sure all of the women at the Excel centre will be extremely grateful”.

The early years team are now planning on collecting throughout 2019 and supporting the centre.
