Council flies flag for LGBT History Month

The rainbow flag was flown over Barking Town Hall at 10am on Monday 4 February to mark LGBT History Month.

The first time it was celebrated, was in 2005 to raise awareness of, and combat prejudice against the LGBT community while celebrating its achievement and diversity.

“We have made so much progress, but we can still do so much more together, as one borough, one community.

The flag raising followed a short speech by Councillor Lynda Rice, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Diversity. Cllr Rice said: “We are very proud to be marking LGBT History by flying the rainbow flag to show our support for the LGBT+ community, but also in recognition of the struggles and campaigns that paved the way for greater equality.

“We have made so much progress, but we can still do so much more together, as one borough, one community. We must all work together to create a place where everyone feels comfortable to enjoy their life, free from discrimination and hate regardless of gender, sexuality, age or ethnicity.”

To mark LGBT History Month there will also be an exhibition about Section 28, which was introduced in 1988 - the clause, part of the Local Government Act 1988, banned the "promotion" of homosexuality by local authorities and in Britain's schools.
