Borough of culture
Borough of Culture
On Tuesday 27 February, the Mayor of London announced the winning Borough of Culture for 2019 and 2020, and six winners of the Mayor’s Cultural Impact Awards.
Although we didn’t pick up the title of Borough of Culture, we were delighted to receive a Cultural Impact accolade and be awarded £243,000 of funding. We will use this funding to create more opportunities for local people to participate in cultural activities across Barking and Dagenham, especially those who currently have limited access to existing projects.
We will do this by delivering three amazing projects:
- New Town Culture will be a three year project for young people. It will be led by historians, writers and artists and see the building of a new public work of art on Barking Riverside.
- Radio Ballads will chart the history of work in our borough – most notably the local histories of trade unions and women’s employment rights, but also what work is like now and will be like in the future. This project is based on an original BBC Radio Ballads series that aired on the radio in the early 1960s and documented the working lives of British people.
Four artists will work with older people in the borough to create separate programmes that will tell stories of working life in east London. We plan for these stories to be broadcast on local radio.
- Culture in Care will be a creative programme for local people in care settings.
Thank you to everybody who supported our bid. Stay tuned for more updates as they happen.
