Stray or lost dogs

We have the legal duty to deal with stray and lost dogs under Section 68 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. However, the responsibility for dangerous dogs is retained by the police.

We keep a register of seized stray dogs which is available for inspection at all reasonable times, as required by section 149(8) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

We will only collect a stray dog that has been restrained.

The dog will be collected from the person restraining them from either the location its is being restrained at or from the person’s address.

Sick or injured dogs

We will provide any sick or injured dog which we seize with appropriate veterinary treatment to prevent unnecessary suffering.

If the animal is returned to its owner, they will be charged the full cost of any treatment provided.
