Right to buy
Tenants of council houses and flats have the general right to buy their home for its market value minus a discount. The discount will depend on how long the tenant has lived in the property. The maximum discount in Barking and Dagenham is £110,500.
To qualify, your current tenancy must be a secure tenancy, you must have been a public sector tenant for at least three years and live in the property as your principal or only home.
Apply to buy your council home
Start your application by completing the right to buy application form and returning it to our Sales and Leasing team at the address below.
After you apply
Once you have submitted your right to buy application, we will contact you to arrange an ID verification appointment. We will be unable to progress your application until this has been carried out.
Within four weeks of receiving your application we will tell you if you have the right to buy your home. If you do have the right to buy your home, we will tell you the cost of your home:
- within eight weeks if your home is a house
- within 12 weeks if your home is a flat or maisonette
Once we receive your right to buy application, your property will immediately be removed from any improvement or refurbishment programmes. In addition, we will only carry out emergency or urgent repairs to the property as required by law.
