Support groups

Play and Communication Service

The play and communication service promotes the development of communication by:

  • supporting children and their families/carers at groups and advice sessions designed by speech and language therapists to prevent the onset of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)
  • identifying any SLCN early on at these groups in order to provide timely and appropriate ideas to meet the needs of individual children
  • providing staff with an Early Years qualification of NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) to carry out assessments and create plans for children and their families/carers in 1:1 and group settings

There are four weekly drop-in groups with a capacity of 15 children and their parents/carers per group:

  • Babbling Babes (Most suitable for ages 0-18m) 
  • Toddler Talk - (Most suitable for ages 0-5 years)
  • Little Rhyme Makers - (Most suitable for ages 0-5 years)
  • Play with a Story (Most suitable for ages 0-5 years)

Speech and Language Therapy Service (SALT)

The speech and language therapy (SALT) service for children in Barking and Dagenham works with parents, carers, early years practitioners, schools and other healthcare professionals to create a supportive environment and develop communication skills for children who are displaying:

  • voice disorders
  • stammering
  • hearing impairment
  • language delay and disorder
  • speech sound difficulties
  • eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties

The service provides Play and Communication advice sessions.

Referrals are accepted from parents/guardians and healthcare, education and social care professionals. Referrals forms should be posted to Trinity School, Heathway, Dagenham, RM10 7SJ or emailed to nem-tr.BDTCSreferrals@nhs.net
