Barking and Dagenham Council has launched a new scheme to give adults the opportunity to support local children who may not have had the best start in life. 

The ‘Independent Visitor’ scheme will involve volunteers being matched with a child in the local authority’s care to provide them with opportunities that they may not have had in the past.

Independent Visitors will meet the child six times a year and support them in carrying out a range of activities to help build their confidence and self-esteem. Activities might include:

• Befriending

• Accompanying them to leisure activities they are interested in 

• Trying new activities together 

• Sharing experiences and spending quality time together

The scheme offers training and ongoing support, plus all expenses are paid. Some trips will be outside the borough, so volunteers need to be willing to travel.

Councillor Maureen Worby, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health Integration commented on the new scheme: “This is a fantastic opportunity to give something special to a young person and I would encourage as many people to get involved. 

“All children deserve the best start in life, however, there are many that are not so fortunate. Providing them with the opportunity to do things that they usually wouldn’t, will certainly put a smile on their faces.”
