Six people who were recently featured in Barking and Dagenham Council’s Wall of Shame CCTV Appeal series have been caught and fined a total of £1,500 for fly-tipping and littering. 

The culprits were fined following council investigations and confidential tip offs from members of the public.

The Wall of Shame helps to catch people committing ‘grime crimes’ on the borough’s streets and continues to be a success – amassing a total of 140,000 views since it started, and helping identify and fine at least one person for every episode filmed. Between 2017/18 and 2018/19 the council has also seen a drop of 31 per cent in fly-tipped waste.

As the 26th episode of Barking and Dagenham Council’s Wall of Shame CCTV Appeal launched last week (link to be added), figures show 28 people have so far been issued a fixed penalty notice as a direct result of the clips.

The videos highlight some of the borough’s fly-tipping hotspots, capturing items such as mattresses, settees and washing machines being illegally dumped, as well as people urinating in the street and littering. It has even featured a man fly-tipping a piano.

The series encourages residents to help identify the culprits caught on camera, who can then be investigated by the council’s enforcement team. Approximately 70 per cent of fines are paid without any further action being required.

This isn’t just about fining people but about cleaning up our borough and sending a strong message to those people who think they can treat our streets like one big dumping ground.

There is never an excuse to fly-tip. It really is that simple. However, if people choose to ignore that, then we will catch you and we will use all our available powers to take action against you.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: “I’m really pleased that with our residents’ help we’ve caught and fined these selfish people who think they can just go around dumping rubbish on our streets. As well as the video appeals, the council carries out targeted leaflet drops in areas where footage suggests the offenders may live close by.
