Barking and Dagenham Council will mark the 24th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide with a special flag-raising event outside Barking Town Hall on Thursday 11 July.

As well as a minute’s silence, there will be speeches, prayers and artwork on display that has been created by local school children.

It is the fifth consecutive year the council has marked the anniversary of the massacre, which took place on 11 July 1995 when the Bosnian Serb Army marched into Srebrenica and killed 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys.



Councillor Lynda Rice, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Diversity, said: “It is important we do not forget the past, so that we can make sure our futures do not end up with history repeating itself. This is the fifth year we are marking this event and I am encouraged to see so many of our borough’s young people get involved. 



“Barking and Dagenham is home to people of all nationalities and religions, and I am proud to say that we work and live alongside one another as one borough, one community.”
