Windrush Day

Council marks Windrush Day for the second year

The Windrush flag was flown over Barking Town Hall at 12pm on Monday 24 June to mark this year’s Windrush Day.

Cllr Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement said: “The Windrush generation have made a massive contribution to our borough in particular and the whole country, and their descendants have continued to enrich the social, economic, political and religious life of our communities.

Councillor Lynda Rice, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Diversity, said: “It’s important we recognise the contribution made by the people from the Windrush generation, not only to this borough but the entire country. We have over 130 different nationalities in Barking and Dagenham, and that’s what makes us such a special borough. I’m delighted Windrush Day has become a permeant fixture in our calendar.”

This council is committed to celebrating Windrush Day on 22 June each year, in honour of the contributions of those who arrived between 1948 and 1971.
