Engineering, design and technology – did you know Barking and Dagenham has a college that specialises in these areas?
East London University Technical College (Elutec) is one of 48 University Technical Colleges in the United Kingdom and offers an exciting educational experience to young people aged 14 to 19, who are interested in engineering, design and technology, sciences and maths.
The college, which is sponsored by Ford Motor Company, University College London and CEME, is currently recruiting students going into Year 10 and Year 12 for September 2019.
Students going into Year 10 will complete their GCSEs at the college and will study Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English, Computer Science, Digital Media or French as well Cambridge Technical Level 2 Engineering.
In addition to the GCSE subjects above, all students will also have a timetabled PE lesson, practical science lesson and an engineering workshop lesson. Students also have the opportunity each week to participate in an extra-curricular activity such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Green Power or Cycle club.
Sixth Form students will have the option of four STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), which will each lead to a STEM course at University or an Engineering apprenticeship.
Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement recently visited the college and was extremely impressed with the facilities and spent a lot of time chatting to the students about their courses and the future:
“I had a great time at Elutec and really enjoyed talking to the students and learning about their aspirations for the future.
“The facilities at the college are fantastic, I couldn’t believe it – the students are very lucky. I would recommend that any young person who would like a career in engineering or design and technology to seriously consider Elutec.”
During her visit, Councillor Carpenter watched an engineering workshop and took up the opportunity to sit in one of the cars designed and used by the college’s Greenpower racing team – a national competition which sees students build and race their own cars.
Kim Donovan Maddix, Principal of Elutec said: “Elutec students have had the opportunity to showcase their technical skills to a number of exciting visitors this year, which has included Councillor Carpenter and Lord Baker.
“Elutec continues to establish itself as a leading engineering school and UTC in Barking & Dagenham. In 2018 the year 13 students all progressed to excellent destinations, with 60% progressing to university and 40% to apprenticeships. Elutec students benefit from a good academic and technical education, working on employer led projects as part of their core curriculum.
“We welcome applications from students with a passion in engineering, science and maths, as well as those who wish to progress to apprenticeships at the end of their school career.”
