A woman has been fined after council officers witnessed a cigarette being thrown out of a car in Wood Lane, Dagenham on Friday 14 September 2018.

The Council served a notice on Debra Ager, the registered owner of the vehicle, to identify who was driving the car at the time of the offence. After failing to comply with the notice to provide information about the driver, Ms Ager was summoned to court. 

On Friday 10 May at Barkingside Magistrate’s Court, Ms Ager from Dagenham was fined £250 and a £30 Victim Surcharge. In addition, she was ordered to pay £409 costs to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: “Littering is completely unacceptable and we’re cracking down on people who mistakenly think they can dump rubbish in our borough.

“Tossing rubbish from vehicles ruins the environment, and wastes tax payer’s money. This case sends out a strong message that we won’t let up when it comes to pursuing people who commit offences, including littering from vehicles. If someone drives your vehicle and commits an offence, by law you must give their details - if you don’t, we will prosecute you and you could receive a fine of up to £1,000 and a criminal record.”
