Barking and Dagenham Council steps up fight against fly tipping tossers

An east London council is determined to win the war against fly tipping and is determined not to take any prisoners in doing so.

Over the last few years, Barking and Dagenham Council has been leading the way in the battle against fly tippers but lockdown has seen an increase in ‘tossers’ dumping their rubbish across the borough. That’s why the council is launching a new initiative to deter the offenders as well as relaunching the award-winning Wall of Shame series that names and shames people on social media dumping their rubbish.

From today, Barking and Dagenham residents will start seeing two different types of signage appearing at fly tipping hotspots to fend off perpetrators. One will be placed at hotspots with cameras and will inform residents that cameras are watching them they and their faces will be shown on the Wall of Shame, and a second that questions why they’re dumping rubbish asking if it is it because they:

•    are too lazy to go to a bin or recycling centre

•    don’t care about the local area

•    think other people should clear up after them

Or is it just because they’re a ‘tosser’?

The hotspots have been specifically chosen by council enforcement officers and the street cleansing team based on the amount of fly tipping that takes place and reports from residents.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “One thing we do not stand for as a council is people messing up the borough and dumping their rubbish on the streets of Barking and Dagenham.

“We’re determined to beat them, and we will do everything in our powers to do exactly that. If you know someone fly tipping, please do report them as they are only making where you live a dirtier place.”

There is no reason for anyone to dump their rubbish as the council provides a weekly refuse collection service, a green garden waste collection service, bulky waste collection that costs only £10 for 1-4 items, a free white goods collection service in partnership with AO and has two tips in the borough.

The return of the Wall of the Shame has seen 14 different people spotted fly tipping at four different locations. The council wants to identify them, so we’re encouraging residents to name and shame, so they can send them a fine of £400.
