Residents of Barking and Dagenham are being urged to continue to follow government guidelines, and only go out for essential reasons, as the Frizlands Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre (Frizlands Lane tip) in Dagenham will remain open. 

 

New government guidelines mean residents can now only take harmful household waste to the tips – things that would cause injury, illness or harm if you kept them at home.

 

Below are a few examples of the kind of harmful household waste that residents can take to the tips: 

• You’ve been doing DIY and you now have lots of DIY waste in your garden, which could harm your children as they play 
• You have lots of green garden waste, which you can’t compost, and it’s attracting flies and smells
• You have a dangerous item of furniture, for example which may have broken glass or large nails sticking out
• You’ve ordered new furniture, and your old furniture is now blocking your hallway or entry to a room, causing a hazard. 

The tips will not currently be open for normal household waste as they previously were. 

 

Residents who have normal household waste that can wait and isn’t causing harm (such as broken electricals, children’s toys or old kitchen or bathroom fittings) should hold onto these things for now, until we’re out of the lockdown.

 

In addition to Frizlands Lane tip, neighbouring tips in Gerpins Lane (Havering), Jenkins Lane (Newham), and Chigwell Road (Redbridge) will also re-open on Monday 11 May. 

We expect the first week to be really busy, so residents should wait until it’s absolutely necessary to go to the tip, to help to reduce waiting times for everyone. Please wait a few days if you can, to help to reduce queues and traffic. 

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: “We know our residents want to get their harmful household waste to the tip when it reopens. 

 

“We expect the first week to be really busy, so residents should wait until it’s absolutely necessary to go to the tip, to help to reduce waiting times for everyone. Please wait a few days if you can, to help to reduce queues and traffic. 

 

“The safety of our residents and staff will always be our main priority. That’s why we all need to follow the rules and also observe social-distancing at the tips. Residents should wash their hands when they return home from the tip as they would anywhere else.

 

“This way, we can help residents to visit the tip to dispose of their harmful household waste and reduce waiting times for everyone.”
