Woman dumped, council saw, and woman fined – CCTV catches out fly tipper

Barking and Dagenham Council CCTV cameras continue to prove its worth in the fight against grime crime as a local woman has been caught and fined for dumping black bags.

Enforcement officers were made aware by CCTV operatives of a woman living on Sunningdale Avenue, who was seen dumping rubbish at the end of the road.

Following this, officers visited the property and were able to speak to the woman, who was immediately identified, as she was still wearing the same clothes as when she was caught by council CCTV cameras.

After introducing themselves, enforcement officers asked why she thought it was okay to dump black backs on the pavement, and she responded with ‘I saw someone else do it, so thought it was okay.’

The woman, who had recently moved to the borough from Newham, was informed that she had committed a very serious offence of fly tipping contrary to s.33 EPA 1990 and could be prosecuted. However, in this instance, she was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £400 instead of the option of prosecution and a criminal record.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This is a great example of cross service work getting results, something that we will continue to do to beat fly tippers.

“We won’t stop the fight against fly tipping and I would like to thank all officers involved for getting another great result.”

If you know someone who is fly tipping, you can report them to the council by emailing grimecrime@lbbd.gov.uk and if you have seen a fly tip, please report it online.
