Black History Month arrives next week!

A month-long celebration of the culture, history and achievements that Black, African, and Caribbean people have brought to the country kicks off in the borough next Friday.

October marks Black History Month and events will start with a flag-raising event outside Barking Town Hall on Friday, 1 October at 10.45am.

There’s a mix of free online and in-person events to get involved in, including an online talk by Ruth D-Whyte an award-winning educationist on Tuesday, 5 October as well as events at Valence House Museum and Valence Library Arts and Culture Hub.

In partnership with Love Music Hate Racism, Barking and Dagenham College and the Adult College of Barking and Dagenham, on Thursday, 14 October, the Broadway Theatre in Barking will host authors, artists, musicians and influential speakers for an afternoon and evening of panel discussions, artwork, poetry and performances to celebrate black history and the influence of their culture on society.

There will also be a chance to make your own chocolate, take part in a painting session, or join in a weekly street dance workshop.

Councillor Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills & Aspirations and Member Development, said: “Black History Month is back, and we’re absolutely delighted that some of our events are able to return to invite people in-person to enjoy learning and experiencing about the impact of black culture on society.

“Our diversity is what makes Barking and Dagenham a wonderful and unique place to live, work and enjoy. After the tough times we’ve all faced recently, what better opportunity to come together safely and enjoy some fantastic free events.”
