Plans on how residents and businesses will benefit from the arrival of London’s biggest film studio development in the borough have been revealed by Barking and Dagenham Council today.

Proposals include Careers Events, Industry focused Workshops, apprenticeships, mentorship schemes, business support and professional development for teachers.

There are also plans to create a database of local businesses that can help the studios and visiting productions meet their skills and supply chain needs, while also encouraging a more diverse workforce for the sector.

The ideas are part of new programme called Film Barking and Dagenham: Make It Here, which outlines four key areas that will provide pathways for residents to access education, employment and business opportunities linked to the studios and its visiting productions, as well as making sure the new venue provides a wider community resource that improves access to cultural activities in the borough.

When they open, both The Wharf and Eastbrook film studios will provide many jobs and opportunities for local people, while injecting £35m per year to the local economy.

Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of the Council, said: “Our borough was once famous for factories and Fords, but in the future, we will be equally famous for making films and today’s announcement outlines how we will unlock the potential of having London’s biggest film studio right here in Barking and Dagenham.

“We want to make sure our residents have a front row seat for film studio opportunities by providing training and support to people of all ages and backgrounds – from school pupils to plumbers or carpenters to computer whizzes. Our plans will help unlock the diverse workforce the film sector needs and guarantee local people benefit.”

Other ideas put forward in the programme include film clubs, summer schools, free screenings, and events in conjunction with the local community.

Eastbrook Studios London will be the capital’s largest studio campus. The project comes with planning permission, and Hackman Capital Partners’ ambitious plans include up to 12 sound stages, three acres of backlot, offices, and ancillary space, totalling over half a million square feet.
