A local café has been ordered to pay a fine of nearly £2,000 after it failed to provide documents that showed how it disposed of its waste following a routine inspection from Barking and Dagenham Council enforcement officers.



Officers visited KSD Café Limited, which was trading as Big Breakfast Café on 27 September 2019 and issued them with a notice to provide their Waste Transfer Notes (WTN) for the last two years within 14 days.



All businesses have a duty of care to ensure that their waste is correctly disposed of using a registered waste carrier and they are required to obtain their Waste Transfer Notes for all waste they produce and dispose of for at least two years.



Despite being sent a reminder and given an extra seven days to provide their documentation, the business failed to do so and was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £300.



Even though the officer spoke to representatives from the café, situated at 78 Wood Lane, and a Notice of Intended Prosecution issued, the fine remained unpaid.



As a result, the case went to Barkingside Magistrates Court, last week, Tuesday 11 January and as they failed to attend, they were found guilty in their absence.



Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “To ensure that there is limited impact on the environment, businesses have a responsibility to make sure that they’re disposing of their waste correctly and keeping a record of how they get rid of it.



“This business not only failed to do this, but also refused to pay the Fixed Penalty Notice and now has to cough up nearly £2000. I hope they have learnt their lesson. Very well done to the officers for their persistence.”



The Dagenham café must now pay a fine of £1,000, costs to Barking and Dagenham Council of £873 and a Victim Surcharge of £100.
