East London council and Police team up for Day of Action

Working closely with the police to combat antisocial behaviour and reduce crime is a key priority for Barking and Dagenham Council, and last week they took part in a joint Day of Action.

The planned operation, which took place on Wednesday 28 June, used crime mapping to identify key areas of concern from across the borough with the aim of preventing robberies, knife crime and reducing violence against women and girls.

Results from the day included:

  • Two arrests
  • One possession with intent to supply and possession of offensive weapons
  • One person found who was wanted for burglary
  • 22 Stop and Searches
  • One Community Resolution issued for the possession of cannabis
  • Two Penalty Notices issued for Disorder and possession of cannabis
  • One Anti-Social Behaviour Warning issued
  • Four weapon sweeps in the local area

Officers from the council’s Enforcement Service were also joined by the police at Dagenham Heathway Station where they spoke to roughly 1,000 people and provided information on the council’s Safe Haven scheme, antisocial behaviour, work being done around violence against women and girls, hate crime, general crime prevention advice and handed out personal and home alarms plus other safety devices.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “These Days of Action continue to have a positive impact on the local community and is a proactive way to keep people feel safe and reassured. We want to show residents that we’re determined to work together with the police to tackle issues that are of real concern to them.

“Crime mapping data has allowed our enforcement teams and the police to target hotspots and achieve some great results. We will continue to hold these Days of Action regularly.”

Superintendent David Rhodes said: “The events of the Day of Action saw partners come together and focus our efforts on problems that the community told us they were worried about. These days are a springboard for closer working and will allow us to achieve more for the communities of Barking and Dagenham by working together.”

Barking and Dagenham Council is determined to ensure that people who live, work or visit the borough feel they can walk around in a safe environment, so will continue to work with the police to tackle key concerns.
