Thames View Skate Park gains a new £40,000 lease of life by council and partner

The once neglected skatepark has received a £40,000 revamp funded by council partner Clear Channel UK and delivered by subcontractors JCS. The council also contributed by purchasing two new activity boards and new plants.

Working with the council and residents, Clear Channel UK’s upgrade to Thames View Skate Park includes new eco-friendly benches made from reclaimed wood, planters fitted at the site, with the area also given a thorough clean and a vibrant new lick of paint.

The work has been carried out by Clear Channel UK as part of their social value commitment to the borough, with funding for the project being awarded to the skate park through a competitive application process in partnership with Barking and Dagenham Giving.

Attended by residents and councillors, the re-opening event saw residents invited to plant flowers for the park as well as free refreshments provided for attendees.

The council’s social value policy requires that any organisation working with the council to provide goods or service over a £100,000 threshold must set out in their tender application how they can deliver wider economic, social or environmental benefits for the residents of Barking and Dagenham.

Cllr Ashraf, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership & Engagement, said: “I want to say a massive thank you to our partners at Clear Channel UK, who have helped to fund and coordinate this stunning revamp.

“The skate park now has plenty of seating for families, colourful new plants and a welcoming new lick of paint – it’s wonderful to see and I’m so glad we’ve been able to deliver this for the residents of Thames View.

“Our motto is that no one gets left behind in Barking and Dagenham, and by working with our partners to make sure that investment into the borough helps our local communities, we’re living up to that pledge.”

Will Ramage, Joint Managing Director at Clear Channel UK, said: “We’re pleased to continue our work with the council, making a positive impact in Barking & Dagenham and building on our commitment to the local community.

“In supporting the rejuvenation of Thames View Skate Park, we’re demonstrating our dedication to being a Platform for Good and creating a more sustainable future for residents.”

Preliminary planning work for the revamp began in 2020, with work carrying on through the pandemic to ensure the delivery of this vital community asset for the people of Thames View.
