B&D teens tune into their creative side for a free music production programme

A pilot Music Production Programme (MPP 2025) has concluded with resounding success, empowering 12 young people aged 12–18 with cutting-edge music production skills over a transformative 10-week journey.

Participants learned to create beats across genres like gospel, electronica, rap, and trip-hop, recorded vocals at the renowned Idris Elba Studio, and were introduced to industry opportunities through CDR, a respected music label and education platform.

The programme was delivered in partnership with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Barking and Dagenham Community Music Service (CMS), BD College, and local young people from Barking and Dagenham.

Several participants continued their musical journeys beyond the programme, some explored further study opportunities in electronic music and engaged with university-led music projects, demonstrating the programme’s lasting impact on their aspirations.

All participants reported increased confidence, skills, and aspirations in music and Guildhall students gained valuable teaching and community engagement experience.

Cllr Elizabeth Kangethe, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement said: "This programme is a shining example of what happens when we invest in our young people’s creativity. It’s not just about music, it’s about confidence, opportunity, and unlocking potential. I urge parents to take a look at the wide range of creative activities we’re offering through the HAF programme this summer."

The council is working with partners to continue bringing music to the borough’s young people over the summer holidays. This summer at The Vibe Youth Centre and Heath Park, young people can explore music, theatre, dance, and food through exciting creative programmes.

At The Vibe (ages 5–12), young people can enjoy global cuisine and hands-on workshops in rhythm, dance, acting, lyric writing and more, plus daily meals and snacks.
