Pupils from ten schools across Barking and Dagenham showcased their creativity, confidence, and commitment to social change at this year’s Social Enterprise Schools Dragons’ Den, held at Boathouse Studios in Barking on 21–22 May.
The two-day event, delivered by the Social Enterprise Academy and supported by the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, gave primary and secondary school pupils the opportunity to pitch their own pupil-led social enterprise ideas to a panel of expert judges. From tackling food waste and promoting mental health to championing water safety and human rights, the young entrepreneurs impressed with their passion and purpose.
The programme, now in its third year in Barking and Dagenham, is part of a wider initiative funded in part by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. It aims to empower young people to address the social and environmental issues they care about while developing key employability and entrepreneurial skills.
On Day one, five primary schools took to the stage, with Hunters Hall Primary School winning the Best Pitch Award and a £100 prize. Other awards included:
- Best Environmental Enterprise – Dorothy Barley Junior Academy
- Most Collaborative – Manor Junior School
- Most Innovative – Eastbury Community Primary School
- Community Impact – James Cambell Primary School
On Day two, five secondary schools presented their ideas, with Eastbury Community Secondary School taking home the Best Pitch Award and £100. Additional recognitions included:

The judging panels featured representatives from Cirrus Logic, ALLRES, BGF, IBEC Solutions, and Councillor Elizabeth Kangethe, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment & School Improvement.

Councillor Elizabeth Kangethe, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement, said: "It was truly inspiring to witness the energy, innovation, and compassion of our young people.
