Barking and Dagenham will mark Black History Month this October with a programme of events celebrating Black history, culture, creativity and achievement.

This year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities, recognises the people whose contributions shape, support and strengthen Black communities, while celebrating the history, culture, achievements and contributions of Black African and Caribbean people in Barking and Dagenham and across the United Kingdom.

Black History Month will officially begin with a flag-raising ceremony outside Barking Town Hall on Thursday 1 October. The Black History Month flag will remain outside the Town Hall throughout October as the borough comes together to mark the month.

Residents can take part in a wide-ranging programme, with opportunities to learn, reflect, celebrate and hear the stories and experiences of others.

Libraries will play an important part in this year’s programme. Barking Learning Centre and Dagenham Library will host Black History Month-themed book displays throughout October, alongside community pop-up events, cultural exhibitions and outreach activities.

The programme also has a strong focus on writing and storytelling through the council’s Pen to Print programme.

Aspiring writers can take part in a four-part workshop series with Silvano Griffith-Francis, supporting participants on their journey from writer to published author.

Award-winning poet Jenny Mitchell will lead a two-part Preparing for Poetry Publication workshop on Saturdays 3 and 24 October.

At Valence House, storyteller and heritage artist Diana Olutunmogun will lead immersive storytelling sessions from Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 October, exploring hidden histories, cultural folklore and stories inspired by the historic house.

The events provide opportunities not only to celebrate Black culture and achievement, but also to explore history through literature and storytelling, reflect on the experiences of previous generations and create space for new voices and stories.

“This month is an opportunity to celebrate those achievements while also reflecting on the generations who came before us – those who broke down barriers, created opportunities and paved the way for others.

“Our diversity is one of Barking and Dagenham’s greatest strengths, and I’m delighted that this year’s programme gives residents so many different ways to come together, share stories, discover something new, learn and celebrate.

“I encourage residents across the borough to explore the programme, take part in an event and make Black History Month 2026 a month to remember.”

Black History Month runs throughout October, with a programme of events and activities for Barking and Dagenham residents. Some activities are free and do not require booking, while individual booking arrangements apply to others.
