Over 100 residents attended the launch of the Digital Inclusion Project on Tuesday 27 January, taking part in hands‑on digital support sessions, meeting trained Digital Champions and learning about the free devices, data packages and training available through the borough’s six Digital Inclusion Hubs.
The launch, held at Barking Learning Centre, was led by Ekota Academy in partnership with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Throughout the afternoon, residents learned how to access digital skills sessions, borrow devices and receive one‑to‑one support in their local libraries, as well as enjoying games and informal conversations with staff and volunteers.
Launching the project, Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council said: “We’re so proud to have secured almost half a million pounds in government funding for Barking and Dagenham residents. This project is about breaking down barriers and making digital skills more accessible. Through this brilliant partnership with Ekota Academy, we’re supporting 3,000 people to gain confidence, develop essential skills and better navigate the technology that plays such an important role in everyday life.”
Ekota Academy Chief Executive Officer, Mizanur Rahman, said: “We’re proud to play a role in widening digital access across Barking and Dagenham. Our aim is simple: to make sure every resident has the skills, resources and tools they need to take part in an increasingly digital world. Today’s event shows what’s possible when community organisations, libraries and volunteers work together.”
Local resident Shah Zaman, from Barking, said: “I came today because I want to learn the basics and feel more confident using a computer. Even simple things like finding files can be frustrating, and that knocks your confidence. This project gives people like me the chance to build skills, get support and finally feel comfortable online. Gaining that confidence will make everyday life so much easier.”
Funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund - the project is transforming six Barking and Dagenham libraries into vibrant Digital Inclusion Hubs, offering residents free training, loans of laptops and tablets, over 1,000 free data packages and support from 30 local Digital Champions - helping people get online, boost job prospects and take part confidently as digital skills become essential for daily life.
Residents who want to know more about the project or get involved can visit the Ekota website at ekotaacademy.com/digitalinclusionproject, or speak to staff at their local library.
