Makers Market
Barking Makers market kicks off this weekend

It is also an opportunity to encourage new business ideas and skills as it will see the market expand into the Town Square area, providing an opportunity for local businesses to test the local market and promote their products.



It will welcome around 27 new market stalls as part of a ‘Makers Market’, supported by the government's Reopening High Streets Safely Fund, and will run on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Saturday 17 July until mid-September, subject to government Covid guidance.

UK’s first Domestic Abuse Commission says community and professionals need huge culture shift in response to domestic abuse

Last night, Wednesday 10 March, Barking and Dagenham Council launched its Domestic Abuse Commission Report. The Commission, which is a UK first, has brought together a panel of national experts and, chaired by Polly Neate CBE, CEO of Shelter, has been looking at attitudes to domestic abuse in the local community. The report, which is a culmination of 17 months of work, is intended to act as blueprint for others to follow in tackling this national issue, which has only been exacerbated by a year of lockdown caused by COVID-19.

Month-long free online events programme to celebrate Women’s Empowerment Month

This March, Barking and Dagenham residents are being invited to take advantage of a variety of free online events to mark the achievements of women past and present as part of Women’s Empowerment Month.

Now in its seventh year, the month-long programme of events celebrates the contribution that women and girls make to the borough and draws on the official themes marked by International Women’s Day and The United Nations International Women’s Day.

Council reaction to government plans around schools re-opening in January 2021

In today’s announcement (30 December) from the Education Secretary Gavin Williamson MP, we discovered that Barking and Dagenham is on a list which means our primary schools will only be open to children with a social worker and children of key workers on Monday 4 January. 21 other London boroughs are also on this list which appears to be based on case rates.

Local businesses reminded to find out if eligible for a Covid business grant

Businesses operating in Barking and Dagenham who have been impacted by local and national Covid-19 restrictions are being invited to check if they are eligible for grant support.

Businesses must complete an online application in order to receive a grant as there are four different types of grants all with different eligibility criteria and grant award amounts.

Applications invited for local people to consider a career in local government

Residents of Barking and Dagenham are being encouraged to consider a career in local government by taking advantage of the opportunity to apply for a place on the National Graduate Development Programme (NGDP).

The NGDP is a fast-track two-year programme for local graduates to work across different council services to influence, shape and improve council services for residents.

Newly qualified graduates who are borough residents and looking for new opportunities in local government are welcome to apply.

Thames Clippers to Service Barking Riverside 

Barking Riverside Limited and Thames Clippers have agreed a long-term contract to extend the capital’s leading River Bus service to the growing East London district. 

Expected to open Winter 2021, Barking Riverside will be Thames Clippers’ newest stop across the river network, which will expand the service to 24 locations along the River Thames, marking the ambition to move services to the heart of East London.
