Council’s money and debt advice service making a difference

Last week in the run up to Easter, the council’s Homes and Money Hub service received 152 phone calls from residents for help and advice with managing their finances during the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the lockdown began in March, the service has supported 198 households with a number of issues. A total of 98 residents are being supported with Council Tax arrears, 78 with rent areas and have also issued 123 food bank vouchers to help people through the crisis.

Councillor Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Aspiration, said: “Being in debt is one of the most stressful things that can happen to anyone. Some of you may be feeling worried or anxious about how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting you and your family financially.

“If you are struggling to pay things like your rent, Council Tax, mortgage or energy bills, please don’t ignore it. Speak to one of our staff in the Home and Money Hub who will work with you to see what financial support you may be eligible for and help you get your finances back on track.”

Residents worried about debt or finances during the pandemic can contact our Home and Money Hub for help and support. Residents can contact the service by email at homesandmoneyhub@lbbd.gov.uk or or drop in at Barking Learning Centre and Dagenham Library from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

For residents with an existing case, they will be required to provide details including their full name, contact number and a reference number.
