Council Tax Rebate countdown - £2m remaining to be claimed

A total of £2m in Council Tax Rebate remains unclaimed by households in Barking and Dagenham and they are being urged to get in touch.

Around 13,000 households that do not pay their Council Tax by direct debit and have not yet applied for their £150 rebate are being reminded that they have until 31 August to apply. The rebate is not a loan and they do not have to pay this back.

Households are being reminded to act now so that they don’t miss out.

So far over 60,000 households have received their payments with a further 400 currently being processed. Households that pay their council tax by direct debit received the rebate automatically, paid directly into the bank account that the direct debit comes from. But households that do not pay their council tax by direct debit have to apply for the rebate, and thousands of residents still haven’t applied.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, Cllr Saima Ashraf, said: “The cost-of-living crisis is hitting families up and down the country and our borough is no exception. We have a range of support services across the council and are working with our partners to help.

“If you know of a neighbour, family member, friend or someone you work with who have not yet applied, please tell them to get in touch.”

For residents who do not have access to the internet, they can visit one of the following locations Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, where they can get help and support:

Residents who are unable to physically attend any of the locations due to a disability or ill health should please contact the service by telephone on 020 8227 2928.

Residents are advised that it can take on average 2-3 weeks to receive payment from the date that they make their application.
