Marking Refugee Week 2026

Refugee Week this year takes place from Monday 15 to Sunday 21 June.

This year’s theme is Courage, which for refugees is often a daily necessity. It is the courage to face unknown journeys, learn new languages, navigate unfamiliar systems, or even simply to wake up each morning and step into an uncertain world. And no matter our background, Courage is something we all have inside of us, and something we should all foster for the good of ourselves and our communities.

Refugee Week Art Competition

For ages 3-18, complete a piece of art, no bigger than A3, that you feel embodies the word ‘courage’.

Submit by Monday, 8 June for a chance to have your artwork displayed in one of our community hubs between 15 and 21 June, and win a prize

Students at participating schools can submit via their teacher or submit their work by dropping it into the Barking Learning Centre.

Events

A variety of events have been arranged across Barking and Dagenham Borough, with something for everyone. Some of our community hubs will have displays to mark the occasion, and you can find special Refugee Week reading lists to help you learn more about the refugee experience and refugee authors’ works.
